QU College of Dental Medicine receives international recognition


Doha: The research initiatives of the College of Dental Medicine at QU Health in Qatar University (QU) in collaboration with Hamad Medical Cooperation have been recognized by the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) through the establishment of the IADR Qatar Section.

IADR is the world’s largest and most respected organization for research in dentistry and oral health.

Founded in 1920, this association aims to promote research in all fields of oral and related sciences, to stimulate the improvement of methods for the prevention and treatment of oral and dental diseases, to improve the oral health of the public through research, and to encourage collaboration between researchers and to facilitate the communication of research results and their implications around the world. The IADR organizes many prestigious oral health research conferences around the world and has the most prestigious research journal in dental research.

The Vice President for Medical and Health Sciences, Dr. Asmaa Al-Thani, expressed her delight at the news.
“Joining the IADR brings international recognition and visibility to dental research in Qatar, particularly to QU Health and the College of Dental Medicine, as well as the Department of Dentistry at HMC. A Qatari branch in the IADR opens up the possibility of organizing major international scientific research meetings in Qatar and leading global initiatives in oral health research,” she said.

Professor Mandeep Duggal, Dean of the College of Dental Medicine, said: “We are delighted that the International Association of Dental Research, the largest and most prestigious dental research organization in the world, has formally endorsed dental research in Qatar by recognizing Qatar Division as one of the member associations of the IADR. We are proud that our joint efforts of Qatar University’s College of Dental Medicine and Dental Research in HMC have been recognized by the IADR. This will further enhance joint oral health research in Qatar and bring international visibility and recognition for Qatar University and HMC in the field of oral and dental research and allow us to host prestigious international dental research events. This will also be a big step to make it happen To enable dental researchers from Qatar to be at the forefront of the world dental research arena.”

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Faleh Tamimi, said, “The College is planning to organize medium-sized meetings soon under the umbrella of IADR in Qatar and is seeking and making an offer to organize the large international meeting of IADR in Qatar. This meeting usually gathers around three to five thousand participants from all over the world and has never been held in the Middle East before. Qatar would be an excellent place to hold such a meeting due to the strategic geographic location and infrastructure available in Qatar. In addition, joining the IADR gives the Qatari Division the right to vote on the organization’s decisions.”

dr Ghanim Al Mannai, Director of HMC’s Dental Department, commented: “A new milestone has been set for the future of dental and oral health in Qatar. The creation of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Qatar division is another step towards improving oral health through research. This addition will provide the State of Qatar with a vast research network and collaboration opportunities with other IADR departments, spanning 111 countries.”
